From the Yoga Mat to the Round Pen: My Journey into Equine-Assisted Learning

Over the past several months, I’ve been expanding my work into Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL), and I’m now beginning to offer EAL sessions alongside my yoga and mindfulness offerings.

At its core, this work is an integration of everything I’ve been building for years: self-awareness, embodied mindfulness, breath-led presence, and personal development rooted in real experience rather than theory. In EAL, the horse becomes an active partner in that process, offering immediate, honest feedback through movement, energy, and interaction that helps bring awareness to patterns we often can’t see on our own.

What is Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL)?

Equine-Assisted Learning is an experiential approach to personal development that uses structured activities with horses to support self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, and resilience.

Unlike traditional talk-based coaching, EAL takes place on the ground in real time. Horses respond to human behavior and internal state with remarkable sensitivity, creating clear, nonverbal feedback loops that help participants notice how they show up in the world.

No riding experience is required. The focus is not so much horsemanship, but learning through relationship, presence, and observation.

Yoga, Mindfulness, and Equine-Assisted Learning in Practice

My background in yoga and mindfulness deeply informs how I facilitate EAL sessions. Just as breath and awareness are anchors in yoga, they also become essential tools in the arena. Mindfulness practices and simple breathwork are woven into my EAL sessions to help regulate the nervous system, increase presence, and support integration of insight as it arises. The horse is not separate from this process. The horse is part of it.

Through their responsiveness, horses naturally draw participants into the present moment, mirroring what is happening internally and externally. This creates a powerful environment for self-inquiry, grounding, and embodied awareness.

Coaching & Personal Development with Horses

FireHorse EAL sessions blend equine-assisted learning with coaching and personal development.

Rather than giving advice or directing outcomes, I guide participants through experiential exercises with the horse and reflective dialogue that helps uncover patterns, strengths, and areas for growth. The horse becomes a co-facilitator in this process, offering feedback that is immediate, honest, and free from judgment.

This work can be especially supportive for adults navigating:

  • Burnout and chronic stress

  • ADHD and neurodivergence

  • Anxiety or emotional overwhelm

  • Major life transitions

  • Feeling stuck, disconnected, or uncertain

The goal is not to “fix” anything. It is to create space for awareness, choice, connection, and meaningful change.

Training and Certification in Equine-Assisted Learning

I recently completed the Fundamentals of Equine-Assisted Learning course through PATH Intl., which provided a strong foundation in ethical practice, facilitation principles, and experiential learning design.

Key learnings from this training include:

  • The importance of clear structure and intentional activity design in EAL sessions

  • The role of the facilitator as a guide rather than an interpreter

  • How horses reflect human behavior and emotional congruence in real time

  • The value of allowing participants to arrive at their own insights through experience

  • The central importance of safety, consent, and horse welfare in all programming

One of my biggest takeaways is that transformation is not delivered; it is experienced. The horse helps make that experience visible.

In addition to formal training, I’ve been volunteering regularly at Horse and Buddy Therapeutic Riding Center in New Hill, North Carolina.

I began as a sidewalker, supporting riders during therapeutic riding lessons, and have since stepped into a horse leader role, guiding horses on the lead line during sessions. This hands-on experience has been invaluable. It has deepened my understanding of horse behavior, human support in equine environments, and the subtle communication that happens between horse, rider, and facilitator.

More than anything, it has reinforced the importance of presence, timing, patience, and humility in this work.

I am currently pursuing the EALF-PD (Equine-Assisted Learning Facilitator – Personal Development) microcredential through PATH, Int'l. This certification will further support my ability to design and facilitate structured EAL experiences focused on personal growth, resilience, emotional regulation, and self-awareness for adults.

I intend to continue building FireHorse EAL as a grounded, accessible space for people navigating life's many challenges and those who are ready to reconnect with themselves in a more honest and embodied way.

FireHorse EAL Sessions Now Available

These experiences are not about performance, riding, or horsemanship skills. They are about learning through relationship: with horses, with the present moment, and with yourself.

Each session is designed to create space for insight, reflection, and real-world integration that extends beyond the barn and into everyday life.

If you’re curious about this work, I’d love to connect.

xoxo,
